Client Spotlight: Naked Snacks

Founded in 2015, Naked Snacks is a Vancouver-based snack subscription box company that offers healthy snacks in a fun and engaging way. From savoury snacks like Hearty Tamari, to the spicy Wasabi Me, to the sweet and nutty Maple Praline, there’s something for everyone, no matter your tastebuds and preferences. You can order their snacks online through their subscription box and gifting service, shop in-person at grocery stores like Whole Foods and Urban Fare, discover them in your own office snack pantry, or find them at hotels (whenever we return to those).

Our Work With Naked Snacks

Photography, organic social media, email marketing

Modern Mix Marketing began working with Naked Snacks in February 2020, staging lifestyle photography and managing their organic social media marketing. 

Up until this point, Naked Snacks had very little owned photography. So, we started our photoshoots by focusing on evergreen content like box packaging and founder portraits, imagery that doesn’t “expire”, that we’d be able to use year-round on social media and other marketing channels. Prior to our involvement, they were mainly relying on photography shared by customers or influencers to use in their own marketing, meaning they couldn’t always control the visual narrative of their brand.

We also helped formalize their social media process, providing monthly content plans with healthy and lighthearted social media content and took over caption writing and community management of their 20,000 Instagram followers. By freeing up our clients’ time from social media, they were able to shift their attention to other pressing business matters (like sales and distribution) and other initiatives that would directly grow their business.

The Growth of Naked Snacks

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the hotel and office lines of revenue for Naked Snacks flatlined, while their eCommerce channels soared and grew by 3x. The company strategically doubled down on digital marketing and concentrated their efforts on their ‘owned’ subscribers (through social media, email, and their subscription boxes). With that new direction, we were also hired to re-start their email marketing efforts.

The hard work of the team paid off. Even in the midst of a global pandemic, Naked Snacks grew to a point where they could hire a full-time, in-house marketing and social media coordinator. We were so happy to see this success and see that our efforts contributed to their growth. Not only that, but we’re ecstatic that they kept us on for our photography services, and we’ve continued to work with them to provide photography for their digital channels. 

Throughout 2020, we conducted seasonal photoshoots for Naked Snacks, continually contributing to their library of ‘owned content’. We wanted to make sure the founders, boxes, and snack pairings were all shot in a vibrant style that best represented their fun, healthy, and wholesome brand. 

With regular photography, we’ve been able to help them showcase Naked Snacks in seasonal contexts:

  • We staged a summer-themed charcuterie picnic (June 2020)

  • We gathered our coziest throws and sweaters and cute mugs for a fall-themed photoshoot (August 2020)

  • We brought out our holiday decorfor a photoshoot that’d support all their holiday gifting promotions and initiatives (October 2020)

  • We provided styled lifestyle photography in support of their new snack flavour launches

One image style that keeps outperforming the others on social media is that of their letterboard signs, so we added that to our shot list rotation as well. Instead of them needing to source photos of letterboard quotes online, we assembled and photographed custom quotes designed specifically for Naked Snacks. Owning their photography also meant they were able to include diversity in their models, selecting subjects of different ethnic backgrounds (models sourced by Naked Snacks).

Other successes for Naked Snacks that we were a part of included their inclusion into The Jilly Box and their launch into Bed Bath and Beyond, for which we provided the ecommerce photography.

Let’s Keep It Going

We can’t wait to see what’s in store for Naked Snacks this year. Already, as of January 26, 2021, they’ve rebranded to Laid Back Snacks, and we are just starting to see our launch photography being used on their social media.
